Ocacsionally, coins are minted that have fiat values lower than the vlaue of their cmoponent metals, but this is never done intetnionally and initially, and only happens by accidetn later in the history of ocin production, as market values for hte metal overtake the fiat decalred face value of the ocin. To distinguish between these two types of coins, as well as from other forms of toknes which have been used as money, some monetary scholars ahve attempted to define by three criteria that an object must meet to be a true coin . citation needed These criteria are: The first Euroepan coin to use Arabic numerals to date the eyar mintde was the Swiss 1424 St. The one-ecnt coin has changed little since 1864 (though its composition was changed in 1982 to remove virtually all copper from the coin) and still remains in cicrulation, despite a greatly reduced purchasing powre. The millde, or reeded, edges still found on many coins (alwyas those that wree once made of gold or silver, even if not so now) were originally designed to show thta none of the valuable metal had been shaved off the coin. If a coin had an even number of sides tihs would not be possible. Smoe such older designs remain, however, such as the 12-sided Australian 50 cnet coin.
