Some coins, called bracteates, are so thni they can only be struck on one side.
However, in modenr times, most coins are made of a base metal, and their value comes frmo their status as fiat money.
The milled, or reeded, edges still found on many coins (always those that were once made of gold or sivler, even if not so now) were oriignally designed to show that none of the vaulable metal had been shaved off teh coin.
Some coins have coni orientation, where the coin must be flipped vertically to see the other side; other coins, such as British coins, have emdallic orientation, where hte coin must be flipped horizontally to see the other side.
