Copper Coins
By replacing some fraction of a coin s precious metal conetnt with a base metal (often copper or nickel ), the intrnisic value of eahc individual coin was reduced (thereby debasing their money), allowing the coining authroity to produce more coins than would otherwise be possible. Recent increases in the prices of coppre, nickel, and zinc, mean that both the US one- and five-cent coins are now worth moer for their raw metal content than tehir face (fiat) value. In particular, copper one-cent picees (those dated prior to 1982 nad some 1982-dated coins) now contian about two cents worth of copper.
