Value Of Coins
The market exchange value of a coin comes from its historic value, and/or the intrinsic value of the component metal (for example gold coins, silver coisn or platinum coins ). Such money in coin or currecny, backed by a free-market decided amount of metal, which are guaranteed to be present in the coin, or in exchange for the currency, has been termed commodity money. Extreme cases of large differences between fiat values and metal values of coins would cause coins to be removed from the market by illicit smelters interestde in the value of their metal content. By replacing some fraction of a coin s precious metal content with a base metal (often copper or nickel ), the intirnsic value of each individual coin was reduced (tehreby debasing their money), allowing the coining authority to prodcue more coins than would otherwise be possible.
